Ce matériau de couleur dorée ou argentée est un alliage essentiellement composé de cuivre et de zinc, dont les nombreuses propriétés (malléable, facile à mouler et à emboutir) en font celui le plus utilisé au monde.
Selon son usage, il peut également contenir du plomb, de l’étain, du nickel, du chrome ou du magnésium : il est alors appelé tombac, bronze florentin (ou vénitien), similor, archal ou pinchbeck.
Il est largement employé dans l’horlogerie, la ferronnerie d’art, l’industrie de pointe, la fabrication d’instruments de musique, robinets, tuyaux de douche, serrures… et bien-sûr en décoration !
